Heuer 3645 Valjoux 92: the forgotten chronographs before the Carrera

· Mamontrevintage

In the early 1960s, Heuer made small two-register chronographs that tell a different story from the famous Carrera and Autavia. Reference 3645, in its historical form, belonged to a more accessible range but still featured serious watchmaking engineering: a hand-wound Valjoux 92 calibre.

Heuer: from industrial precision to wrist chronographs

Heuer was founded in 1860 by Édouard Heuer in Saint-Imier. The company developed its expertise in mechanical time measurement and, in 1887 , notably refined the oscillating pinion, a fundamental mechanism in chronograph operation.

Sports chronographs, dashboard timers and instruments for aviation and motoring helped the company expand during the twentieth century. At the beginning of the 1960s, it still marketed numerous hand-wound two-register chronographs.

TheAutavia appeared as a wristwatch in 1962 and the Carrera in 1963. Reference 3645 belongs to the period preceding the brand's best-known collections.

1961: before the Carrera design language

The specialist archive OnTheDash dates the introduction of Heuer reference 3645 to 1961 and documents its appearance in early-1960s catalogues. It is a relatively small, approximately 35 mm, two-register model, created before the Carrera became central to Heuer's chronograph image.

“Pre-Carrera” is a convenient way to place this chronograph in a timeline, but it was not necessarily its official designation. As the Carrera arrived in 1963, it is more accurate to describe the 3645 as an early-1960s Heuer reference than to assign it retrospectively to a collection that did not yet exist.

Valjoux 92: a classic chronograph movement

Inside the case is a hand-wound Valjoux 92, a two-register chronograph with a 30-minute counter. The running seconds and chronograph minute register have distinct purposes: the first tracks the watch's normal operation, while the second records elapsed time.

The Valjoux 92 is valued for its comprehensible mechanical layout and its ability to measure short intervals. Maintenance nevertheless follows the requirements of a vintage chronograph: pivots and gears, coupling, adjustment of the reset hammers and proper lubrication. The resetting of every hand should be checked and any replacement parts documented.

Cases and early Heuer 3645 executions

The OnTheDash reference table lists the earliest 3645 watches with gold-plated base-metal cases and steel backs; the related 3641 reference is associated with chrome-plated metal. The archive also records later differences in hands, dials and materials. A frontal photograph alone therefore cannot establish that a case is “entirely original stainless steel.”

How the 3645 differs from the Autavia and Carrera

The Heuer 3645 has more restrained proportions than the brand's best-known sports chronographs. Early two-register Autavia models, such as the 3646, also used the Valjoux 92, but had different cases, bezels and dial designs. Sharing a calibre does not make two watches interchangeable.

In a Carrera, legibility and dial layout form part of a separate collection. At Heuer, reference numbers serve as technical identifiers: the case and historical catalogues should guide identification, rather than a vague resemblance to a motoring advertisement.

Heuer 3645: the spirit of the chronographs before the Carrera

The Heuer 3645 combines a hand-wound Valjoux 92, two subdials and a case measuring approximately 35 mm. It belongs to an era when chronographs retained a classical presentation and an instrumental purpose. This reference helps trace the transition from traditional chronographs to Heuer's iconic sports collections.
